Company in Residence

Gateway Theatre is excited to be developing a new Company-In-Residence program that supports performing arts companies with a community-engaged focus. In the past, Gateway Theatre has supported independent companies with rehearsal and performance space, technical support, and workshop readings. Committed to supporting new voices in the community, Gateway Theatre is looking forward to creating meaningful relationships with other companies that are seeking to make change through the performing arts.

The residency will provide studio space, mentorship, and possible performance opportunities. We are currently seeking Richmond-based companies and/or companies that aim to engage Richmond residents.

A Call for Submissions will be announced in 2022 for the incoming Company-In-Residence.

2021-2022 Company in Residence: New(to)Town Collective

New(to)Town Collective has been selected as the inaugural Company-In-Residence for their innovative approach to performing arts training. Their aim to make training accessible has made them a leader in performance education and pedagogy. Through their free Training Jams, New(to)Town has fostered a community of emerging artists across many intersections. Gateway Theatre is excited to be supporting New(to)Town in their continued theatre experimentation and devising practice.

About New(to)Town Collective

New(to)Town Collective is a physical theatre collaboration between June Fukumura, Davey Calderon, Avyen von Waldenburg and Anjela Magpantay. The Collective is interested in collaborating and cross pollinating their practices and ideas with artists from across all disciplines through Training Jams which are accessible, experimental training workshops that inspire new interdisciplinary works and create new ways of working. They bring together a unique blend of practices including: Grotowski, devising, clowning, visual arts, contemporary dance, playwriting, dramaturgy, directing and more! The Collective integrates these practices to train and create new works while supporting each other's individual artistic endeavors.
