MASK MANDATE UPDATE: The BC government has announced that masks will no longer be required indoors beginning March 11, 2022. After careful consideration, we will still be requiring all patrons to wear a mask when inside our venue. When we first engaged the artists and went on sale for Certified, there was an understanding that masks will be worn throughout the entire run of the show. We would like to keep this promise and respect the safety and comfort levels of all the artists, patrons, staff, and volunteers inside this intimate show. We will be reviewing this policy after the run of Certified but in the meantime, we thank you for your cooperation and consideration of others.

Written and performed by JD Derbyshire

Directed by Roy Surette

March 8 - 20, 2022

Performed for a live audience in Studio B (at reduced capacity)

Comedian and certified insane person JD Derbyshire turns the audience into a mental health review board in this memoir-play, breaking the stigma around mental health. It is irreverent fun, hilarious and heart-aching journey through the mental health system.

Certified has garnered two Jessie Richardson Awards for Outstanding Script and Critics’ Choice Innovation Award in the 2019 production at Touchstone Theatre. Since its premiere at the Vancouver Fringe Festival in 2016, this show has seen numerous productions across the country including at the Handsome Alice Theatre (Calgary) in 2018, One Yellow Rabbit’s High Performance Rodeo (Calgary) in 2020, and the Progress Festival (Toronto) in 2020.

Certified is about Derbyshire’s journey with mental illness and mental health, but it’s not one of those stories that collapse into the horrors of madness. Derbyshire allows herself to be vulnerable, but she’s also levitatingly funny. And she changed the way I see the world." — Colin Thomas

“Fully passes evaluation—a testament to a dynamic performance and delicate storytelling.” — The Georgia Straight

Run time: 70 minutes, no intermission

Audience advisories: Strong language, sexual content and nudity, audience participation (minimal)

Recommended age: 14+

In order to keep everyone safe, all performances will run with a reduced audience capacity. We have adjusted our seating to be booked in singles or pairs. This will ensure seats immediately in front of, behind, and either side of you are kept clear.

All performances of Certified are in an ‘open environment’ where you can be relaxed and be your natural selves to enjoy the show at your comfort level. In an open environment, you can come in and out of the studio, move around and fidget, and generally do what you need to do to feel comfortable in the space. If you feel overwhelmed and need a break from the room, there will be a 'chill-out' space available in the lobby. You are free to re-enter whenever you are ready. An ‘open environment’ welcomes anyone for whom more typical theatre environments may feel too restrictive.

To make sure all feel welcome and comfortable, there will be no shushing during the show. When you attend Certified, we ask you to join us in creating an environment where everyone feels welcome to enjoy the theatre. Learn more about 'open environment' in our FAQs.

How We Are Keeping You Safe:

We deeply care about the health and safety of our patrons, staff, volunteers, and community, and remains our top priority. Besides reducing audience capacity, here are some of the safety measures that remain in place:

  • Adhering to provincial health orders, patrons aged 12 and over will also be required to show proof of full vaccination with valid photo ID.
  • Masks must be worn all times inside the venue unless patrons are under the age of five or have a physical or medical condition that prevents them from wearing a mask.
  • Hand sanitizing stations will be readily available throughout the experience and ask patrons to exercise good hand hygiene.
  • Patrons are strongly encouraged to be respectful of the personal space and comfort of the people around them while moving through this event.
