FROM SCOTT BELLIS
Welcome to this colourful and vibrant re-imagining of Jane Austen’s timeless (and timely) novel Pride and Prejudice. As I write this, I am preparing to open the show with the actors at Western Canada Theatre in Kamloops, where it will play before it arrives at the Gateway. It’s always an exciting moment. The set and costumes are almost ready; props are being gathered and built; and the actors are running their lines and choreography with as much anticipation as the Bennet sisters at the prospect of a summer ball at Netherfield.
This bright and bold adaptation by playwright Kate Hamill retains all the familiar and well-loved characters of Austen’s story: the wilful and witty Lizzy, the stoic and handsome Mr. Darcy, the histrionic Mrs. Bennet, and the roguish Mr. Wickham, to name a few; but it also shakes off 200 years of historical dust with a burst of comic electricity and contemporary sensibility. Jane Austen’s desire for us to recognize ourselves through (or in spite of) our feelings for others, however, still lies at the centre of this romantic Regency era adventure.
English society in the early 1800s was a labyrinth of ridiculously complicated social rules. Are our times any different? What games must we play, whether we are fitted for them or not? What traps are laid before us? And what can we do about them?
On a less serious note, there are far more characters in this story than actors to play them all. That’s by design. I hope you enjoy our efforts to accommodate that challenge as much as we do.
It’s always a treat to come back to the Gateway. Growing up in Richmond, I worked here as a stagehand when it first opened in 1984. I was just finishing high school and searching for my next life path. Those experiences were formative, and, after forty years in professional theatre, have stayed with me. Thank you for being here today.
